CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

A new student-designed sculpture in Chapel Hill is honoring the 50th anniversary of Phillips Middle School.

The sculpture was designed by eighth grader Tiffany Jackson as part of a class at the school.

Jackson said some people see birds in the abstract art, which is a play on the school’s falcon mascot.

Students drew out their designs on paper and then created 3D cardboard versions.

Jackson won a contest to turn on of those 3D models into a real metal piece of art.

“It’s kind of weird just thinking that my tiny cardboard sculpture turned into a sculpture that’s going to be here 10, 15 years. And, my mom always says, ‘Yea, you can bring your kids to the school, ‘Oh, mommy made that.’’ Things like that. So, yea, it’s amazing,” Jackson said.

Sculptor Mark Elliott turned the design into the metal artwork.

The Town of Chapel Hill paid for him to be the school’s artist in residence and work with the students on the project.
