Raleigh's Simpson seeks another Open title

RALEIGH, N.C. -

One month after the birth of his third child, Raleigh native Webb Simpson will compete for his second U.S. Open title in Pinehurst June 12-15.

Simpson won the 2012 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Simpson and his wife, Dowd, welcomed daughter Wyndham Rose Simpson on May 12, just one day from being cut from The Players Championship.

Simpson has not played in a tournament since the Players Championship.

Simpson has four PGA Tour wins, the latest being the 2013 Shriner's Hospitals for Children Open in October. Simpson has played in 13 events so far this season and was cut from three of those, including the Valspar Championship, the Masters Tournament and The Players Championship.

He is currently ranked 15th in the FedEx Cup ranking and 33rd in the Official World Golf ranking.

Simpson, who now lives in Charlotte, is one of North Carolina's top hopes as the Open approaches. While North Carolina is a state known for golf, Open wins have been difficult. Raymond Floyd of Fayetteville won the 1986 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York.

Simpson's 2012 U.S. Open win on June 17 catapulted him into the upper echelon of golfers.

That victory came shortly before the birth of his second child, Willow Grace Simpson, in July 2012. He remained out of tournament play for one month.

When he returned to play in the PGA Championship he missed the cut. The trend continued when he missed the cut in The Barclays in late August and finished 51st in the BMW Championship in September.

Simpson attended Broughton High School in Raleigh where he played on the varsity golf team. He went on to play golf for Wake Forest University on the Arnold Palmer Scholarship. Simpson was a three-time All-American at Wake Forest and was the ACC Player of the Year in 2008, the same year he went pro.
