BCS launching a discount program to keep teachers

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, N.C. - Beaufort County Schools is taking a proactive approach to recruiting and retaining teachers.

This summer the school system is launching a discount program called C.A.R.R.E. The incentive program stands for Communities Aiding in Recruiting and Retaining Educators.

Superintendent of Beaufort County Schools, Don Phipps, says they are trying to be creative when it comes to keeping teachers in the county.

"We want to make some decisions and think outside the box, to look beyond what everyone else is doing.  I think it shows we understand what the needs are and we are excited about what that looks like," said Phipps.

The school system is working with the Washington-Beaufort Chamber of Commerce to recruit local businesses. Once they get the businesses on board, the school system will create a discount card that will be given to all school employees.

Twenty-four year teaching veteran of Beaufort County Schools, Sue Faucette, hopes the discount card is a success.

“I think it’s a drawing card. I think it’s going to be great for our community, it’s going to help [the economy] of our county. It's just a win- win situation," said Faucette.

Phipps says another perk of the C.A.R.R.E program is it doesn’t cost the school system or the county any money.

The school system hopes to provide the discount cards to all employees at the start of the upcoming school year.
