Helena named the safest city in Alabama

Posted: Updated:
HELENA, AL - Movoto Real Estate has released a list of the safest places in Alabama, and the city of Helena located in Shelby County tops the list.

The real estate blog compiled its data based on the 2012 FBI Uniform Crime Report. The rankings are based on data including murders, rapes, robberies and assaults.

There were no reports of murders in Helena during 2012. The city was also noted for having the lowest property crime rating.

"Safe. We go away and nothing ever happens to the house or anything, no breakins," said Clinton Mallory who has lived in Helena for the past 23 years.

"I love living here and this is where I'll be buried."

Movota Real Estate of California named Helena the safest place in Alabama using FBI data from 2012, but how accurate is the report two years later?

"We're pretty much on an even playing field with each year, the numbers are usually the same or close to one another, " said Det. Sgt. Chris Rollan with the Helena Police Department.

Rollan said the low crime rate is a draw to the area.

But, Helena, is not crime-free.

Sgt. Rollan said police deal with their share of property and cyber crimes as well as identity theft.

"We're very fortunate. But, two, we have a very good citizen base here. Good citizens that stay to themselves and mind their own business."

A number of other central Alabama cities received high rankings.

Number two on the list is Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills is listed at number three, Pleasant Grove falls in the number four spot and Alabaster rounds out the top five.
