PINEHURST, N.C. -

The Village of Pinehurst is abuzz as it gears up for the U.S. Open Championships.

Visitors to the village will notice giant golf balls popping up around town.

The painted balls are part of “Art for Golf.” Local businesses sponsor a ball and then decorate it.

The balls are far from plain white as the newest ones are Duke and UNC themed.

The balls will be on display through June and then auctioned off.

“We have competing teams here. The intent here is to raise money for respective charities," said Ken Baer, operating partner for Dunkin’ Donuts in the Pinehurst area.

The Duke-themed ball has been autographed by coaches Mike Krzyzewski and David Cutcliffe.

North Carolina head coaches Roy Williams and Larry Fedora signed the Tar Heel-themed ball.
