PINEHURST, N.C. -

North Carolina State University played a big part in what golf fans will see when the U.S. Open begins next week in Pinehurst.

In 2010, Pinehurst began work on a huge restoration to Course No. 2 in preparation for the Open; and in doing so, 45 acres of Bermuda turf were removed.

When the sod went away, N.C. State crop scientists began work identifying more than 75 native plants that began to sprout in the new open spaces.

"They needed a space to thrive, and once that sod was removed and those native areas were less heavily managed, it gave those plants the opportunity to grow," explained scientist Danesha Seth Carley.

Carley explained that when the new vegetation began to sprout, organizers loved the look so much they wanted it spread throughout the course in time for the U.S. Open.

"So in some circumstances they had some vegetation in certain areas they really wanted to spread from one hole to another because they loved the look of that vegetation," Carley said.
