Another alternative fueling station has opened in the Birmingham area.

Evergreen Transport held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday for its new compressed natural gas (CNG) station on Highway 25 in Calera.

The new station is expected to fuel many tractor trailer transport trucks, and the CNG will replace about 300,000 gallons of diesel fuel in 2014.

The CNG station was built through a partnership between Evergreen and U.S. Oil, which owns the GAIN Clean Fuel brand.

Evergreen has 12 CNG trucks operating now, and plans to expand that to 30 trucks in 2015.

“We’re thrilled to be celebrating the grand opening of this GAIN station,” said Calera Mayor Jon Graham. “Congratulations to Evergreen for utilizing this domestically produced and cleaner burning alternative fuel. Projects like these have a positive impact. It’s good for business and it’s good for the state.”

The executive director of the Alabama Clean Fuels Coalition says CNG offers many benefits, including being environmentally-friendly and being 30-40 percent cheaper than diesel.

98% of natural gas is produced in North America.

That is compared to oil, which the USA imports 52% of the oil it uses.

The GAIN station will be open to the public and for other carriers to use.
