Some Birmingham-area high school students will be busy this summer, learning a lot about personal finance.

Regions Bank and the Birmingham Mayor’s Office announced the start of SummerQuest Birmingham 2014: The Mayor’s Financial Excellence and College Readiness Youth Challenge.

It’s a citywide competition involving high school students who participate in a variety of activities to earn points towards scholarships, cash and other prizes.

The students will learn lessons of personal financial management, including setting up a budget, managing credit, saving for the future, and steps to enter and pay for college.

Activities begin June 11, 2014, and end July 9, 2014.

“The goal of SummerQuest is to help students understand that the financial decisions they make today will have a long-term impact on their futures,” added Carol Clarke, manager of the Regions Financial Education Institute. “We also help students learn about the types of financial assistance and scholarships that are available to help them attend college and begin successful careers. The lessons learned during SummerQuest can truly benefit students for a lifetime.”

High scorers can win prizes like a $1,000 college scholarship and a $500 gift card.

This is the third year Regions Bank and the Birmingham Mayor’s Office have worked together to encourage students to join.
“A lot of students may not be aware of the resources that are available to help them obtain a college education and manage their money responsibly,” Mayor William Bell said. “SummerQuest empowers young people to take control of their futures and succeed. I encourage high school students across the city to sign up and take part.”
