Insurance Commissioner's warning for 'good' drivers

Posted: Updated:
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin says he does not support the "Good Driver Discount Bill".

It is one of many proposals lawmakers are learning about this short session. The Department of Insurance says the measure could be discussed in the coming weeks. A similar measure did not make it through the General Assembly last year.

Goodwin's office sent out a press release asking drivers to tell their lawmakers to not let the bill continue. The bill is supposed to open up options for insurance plans including discount ones. Some of the discount programs target good drivers and military personnel but are currently not an option yet in North Carolina through common companies like Allstate and State Farm.

“If this proposal passes, I am certain that car insurance rates will go up—even for good drivers,” he said in the release. “Despite what profit-driven insurance companies will tell you, I will have little to no authority to stop rates from going through the roof.”

Insurance companies are in support of the proposal because it allows them to opt out of the N.C. Rate Bureau which reviews requests for rate increases.
