Blue Jays select ECU's Hoffman with 9th pick in 1st round in MLB draft

Posted: Updated:
The Toronto Blue Jays selected East Carolina pitcher Jeff Hoffman with the ninth pick in the first round of the MLB Amateur Players Draft Thursday night.

Hoffman becomes the highest drafted East Carolina athlete in any sport. The previous highest Pirate draftee was Blue Edwards, who was selected 21st overall in the 1989 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz.

Both Baseball America and Perfect Game USA ranked Hoffman as the number two overall prospect in the draft before the season.
His record wasn't sparkling at 3-3, but his era was 2.94 and he struck out 72 batters while walking 20 before shutting everything down with a sore arm.

Hoffman struck out 16 batters in a win over Middle Tennessee, but then he complained of a sore arm. He missed two starts before making the decision to go ahead with the Tommy John surgery.
