NC Democrats, GOP hold state conventions

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina Democratic and Republican activists are gathering for a weekend of speeches from national and state political notables at state convention gatherings.

The state Republican Party convention begins Friday at Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort in the mountains. On Saturday, the state Democratic Party convention precedes the party's annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Raleigh.

Potential 2016 presidential candidates Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee are among Saturday's GOP speakers. So are Gov. Pat McCrory and state House Speaker Thom Tillis, who won the party's Senate nomination last month and will challenge Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan.

Hagan is speaking at the Democrats' dinner, as is Attorney General Roy Cooper, who is planning a 2016 gubernatorial run.
