PINEHURST, N.C. -

Raleigh native Webb Simpson will tee off Thursday at 7:40 a.m. and Cary product Brendon Todd will tee off at 8:02 a.m. when the U.S. Open begins Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2, the United States Golf Association announced Friday.

The Open is being played at the famous 7,562-yard, par-70 course designed by Donald Ross.

The U.S. Open is a 72-hole, stroke-play competition. A field of 156 players will play 18 holes of stroke play on June 12 and 13, after which the field will be reduced to the low 60 scores and ties. Those players making the cut will play 18 holes on June 14 and 15. If there is a tie upon the completion of 72 holes, a scheduled 18-hole playoff will be played on June 16 at noon. If this playoff results in a tie, the tied players will immediately continue to play off hole-by-hole until the winner is determined.

Simpson played at Wake Forest University and Todd played at the University of Georgia.

There are eight other players in the field with North Carolina ties.

Three golfers from Duke - Kevin Streelman, Ryan Blaum and Joe Ogilvie - are in the field.

Ogilvie, ironically, will tee off Thursday at 12:52 p.m. in the same pairing with Mark Wilson, a former ACC rival at the University of North Carolina. Ogilvie finished at Duke in 1996 and Wilson at UNC in 1997. Wilson is the only UNC golfer in the field.

Also in the field are Bill Haas, who was born in Charlotte and played at Wake Forest; Brendon de Jonge, who lives in Charlotte; Darren Clarke, who played at Wake Foreset; and Chad Collins, who played at Methodist in Fayetteville.
