Some donuts free on National Donut Day

Posted: Updated:

Friday is National Donut Day, a day in which Americans are asked to pause and remember how much they love donuts – while taking a big bite of one.

The day falls on the first Friday in June each year. The day originated in France during World War I, when Salvation Army workers gave soldiers coffee and donuts as a way to cheer them up.

The Salvation Army started National Donut Day during the Great Depression as a way to raise funds and bring awareness to the Army’s social service programs.

Many donut places, like Krispy Kreme, gave away a free donut on Friday to celebrate the day.

Dunkin Donuts is giving away a donut with the purchase of any beverage.
