WARSAW, N.C. - One person is dead and another person is in the hospital after a 18 wheeler crashed in Duplin County Saturday night, according to the Highway Patrol.

Troopers say it happened just after 9:30 p.m. on I-40 3 miles west of Warsaw.   The driver, 53-year-old Ronnie Carter from Sampson County, was dead by the time troopers arrived.  The passenger in the vehicle, 67-year-old John Mueller of Sampson County, was airlifted to Hanover Regional Hospital.  He was listed in serious condition Sunday.

Troopers say it appears the driver fell asleep at the wheel.  The 18 wheeler than crossed the median and hit a concrete bridge support.

The overpass at Charlie Frederick Road has been closed since Saturday.  Department of Transportation officials are planning to do a full inspection on the bridge and its supports Monday to make sure it is safe.

The accident remains under investigation.
