Fayetteville budget adds 47 police officers

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Fayetteville City Council voted Monday night in favor of a tax increase that would help pay for more police officers, but fewer than the police chief had hoped.

The city council approved the addition of 3-cent property tax increase to the city's 2015 budget. City council said the money would be used to improve public safety, economic development, parks and recreation.

Included in the budget are the addition of 47 sworn officers and 12 non-sworn staff members for the police department.

Fayetteville Police chief Harold Medlock, however, had asked city council to approve 55 new officers, including 34 patrol officers and 21 detectives. He also wanted to add two supervisors, and 11 support positions that are not sworn officers.

While the additional officers do not meet Medlock's request, City Manager Ted Voorhees said the budget "provides a holistic approach to reducing crime."

The budget also includes $2 million for parks capital; a marketing and business development manager and administrative assistant; and two additional building inspectors and a customer advocate to guide our citizens through the Development Services processes, which the city says would improve both efficiency and effectiveness in customer service.

"We are actually putting our money where our promises are," said councilman Mitch Colvin. "We are using this comprehensive approach for the betterment of our City. Instead of us looking at it like a tax increase, we should look at it as an investment."
