UPDATE: Talbot County man admits to shooting police helicopter

Talbot County, Georgia - A Georgia man in federal custody admitted to the FBI that he shot a Georgia State Patrol helicopter in Talbot County Wednesday.

James Fryer, 59, appeared in federal court Thursday morning, after being arrested at his home in Geneva for firing at the helicopter. An affidavit states that Fryer admitted to firing the shots into the air, but told investigators he was not aiming for the chopper.

Officers say the shots damaged both the helicopter's main rotor blades. The report says Fryer told officers he was upset because the helicopter was agitating his livestock.

The FBI tells News 3 the chopper was flying over the area as part of the Governor's Marijuana Eradication Task Force. Officials say these helicopters are an essential part of ridding the state of drugs.


Gordy Wright with the Georgia Department of Public Safety says, "Generally on average about 500 plots of marijuana [are] located each year with the identification flights, ranging close to 100,000 in some cases, so it's a tremendous amount of marijuana that's taken off the streets."

Fryer is being charged by the FBI with Destruction of an Aircraft. He will have a preliminary hearing Monday at 11 a.m.
