A woman injured in a house fire in Asheville Thursday afternoon has died.

The Buncombe County Medical Examiner's Office says 72 year old Iva Blankenship died Friday morning after suffering burn injuries from a house fire on Sand Hill School Road Thursday.

The Asheville Fire Department says they say they got the call of a house fire Thursday afternoon around 5:31 pm.

Asheville Fire Department spokeswoman Kelley Klope said that Blankenship's neighbor saw the flames coming from the home and went to try and help. However, an off-duty firefighter, Zach Wetmore, was passing by and saw the flames and went to help as well. Wetmore and the unidentified neighbor managed to gain access to the home and found Blankenship just feet from the door and pulled her from the fire.

Blankenship was transported to Mission Hospital where she died at 1:15 a.m., according to Buncombe Co. Medical Examiner Dr. Robert Moffatt. He added that Blankenship had burns to 70 percent of her body and that was the likely cause of death.

The fire department's twitter page says about 40 firefighters responded to the fire. They say the fire was under control in less than a half hour.

No word on a cause of the blaze.
