Local nonprofit teaching kids life lessons through golf

SILER CITY, N.C. -

Pinehurst may be hosting the U.S. Open, but that doesn’t mean there’s no golf happening in the Triangle. In fact, there’s one nonprofit hoping to teach some big life lessons through the game of golf.

It may not be easy to impress elementary school kids, but if you put a golf club in their hands and teach them a few tricks, that can change quickly.

The nonprofit is The First Tee of the Triangle and Brandon Baker is the executive director. Baker plays a big role in teaching the participants about not only golf, but responsibility, respect, and courtesy among other values.

“For a lot of these kids, it’s all about having a little fun and hitting the ball,” he said. “But little do they know the lessons they’re learning in the process.”

Another important lesson the kids learn is perseverance.

“You’re not always going to be successful at every subject,” said Baker. “You may be better at math more than you are at science or English , and so, how do you continue to bounce back even if you don’t always get the results?”

While teaching the students about different values is certainly important, Baker is also teaching them how to play golf, a sport that isn’t widely available in schools.

“Hopefully they’re going home to mom and dad and say[ing], ‘I learned what it means to be respectful today,’ Baker said. “And mom and dad’s going to be like, ‘about time!’”

The First Tee of the Triangle has a variety of programs happening all summer long. To learn more, you can visit their website here.
