Delta Airlines tweets - oops! - that giraffes live in Ghana

Delta Airlines is coming under fire for a tweet celebrating the United States’ win over Ghana in the World Cup Monday in Brazil.

The message on Twitter includes the score and pictures of the Statue of Liberty for the U.S. – and a giraffe for Ghana.

The problem?

Giraffes don’t live in Ghana.

The tweet prompted a flurry of angry complaints. Delta took the tweet down and apologized.

On its website, Delta said, “The image was both inaccurate and inappropriate.

“As a global airline, we understand the role images play in shaping global perceptions. We also recognize our responsibility to create messages that are both accurate and inclusive. We take this responsibility seriously.

“Yesterday, we failed to meet this responsibility. For this, we sincerely apologize.”

Ghana is located on the western coast of Africa. Giraffes live in the savanna areas of the sub-Saharan parts of Africa – south of the Sahara desert, and most are located in central to east Africa.
