Marshals' host "Refuse to be a Victim" seminar

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - "It's designed to get people out of the norm and out of complacency,” said Deputy Anthony Humphries.

The Marshal’s office hosts the "Refuse to be a Victim" seminar 4 times a year to remind people to be constantly aware of their surroundings.

"It's not that we live in a dangerous society but there is danger in society and if you don't know what to look for and you don't know what a predictor of a crime could be--it's hard to determine if you may be a victim of a crime,” said Humphries.

Deputy Anthony Humphries says to protect your home, you should have deadbolt locks on doors and if you’re moving into a new home, change or re-key the locks so previous owners can’t get back in.

He also stressed lighting. The deputy says it’s easy for a criminal to learn your patterns just by watching when your lights are on and off, so switch it up if you can. For people traveling during the summer months, social media can make you extremely vulnerable to potential crimes.

"Don't send pictures of yourself on the beach at 1 in the afternoon and then be surprised when your house is robbed at 2 in the afternoon. Even though you have friends, they have friends as well on the same feed who can see your pictures when they like it,” said Humphries.

He says the most important things you can do to protect yourself are to stay aware and trust your instincts.
