Suspect turns himself in after 7-year-old hit by stray bullet

Posted: Updated:
Police say a man accused of shooting a seven-year-old boy has turned himself in.

The shooting happened on  the 300 Block of Richard Green Court last Friday evening.

Officers say they were called to the area for shots fired just after six o'clock. When they arrived, they found a seven-year-old boy had been hit in the leg. The child was transported to Lenoir Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

As a result of the investigation, officers obtained an arrest warrant for 23-year-old Simeon Deon Meadows of Kinston.

Meadows turned himself in Wednesday morning and faces Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury and Secret Assault charges. He was already on pretrial release for several drug charges and is due in court in July. He's now in the Lenoir County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond.

Officers believe Meadows was in a car when he fired a gun. They don't believe the boy was the target of the shooting and say he was hit by a stray bullet.
