Highland Mud Run helps Columbus family with medical bills

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

A Columbus family is overjoyed Sunday night, after getting a $5,000 donation to help out with medical bills for their 2 year old daughter. The money was raised during the 2nd Annual Highland Mud run held right here in Columbus.

"We wanted to make a donation for the medical treatment for Madison in the amount of $5,000," said Brad Lacy.

Highland Mud Run organizers and the Richmond family met up at Rivertown Buick GMC, one of the sponsors of the Mud Run, Sunday afternoon. Their daughter Maddie has an inoperable brain tumor. The 2 year old has been getting chemotherapy treatments since December and has another 12 to 18 months to go.

"It's a scary situation. You go from being scared to death to in this fighting mode where you do what you gotta do to get your kid better and get her through what she needs to get through," said Jessica Richmond.

Along with the $5,000 check, the Highland Mud Run team presented the family with a special message board. It's filled with well wishes and prayers for Maddie. The Richmond family will continue with their doctors visits and chemotherapy treatments. The family will use the money to help with those expenses.

Jessica and Bryan tell me they are overwhelmed with the support they've received from family, friends, and even strangers in the community.

"It's shows you that there is a lot of good people out there. There is. It's really just overwhelming right now. We're just thankful,' said Jessica.
