JACKSON, MS (WFLA) - A viral story about a 3-year-old girl who was asked to leave a Jackson, Mississippi KFC restaurant because her facial injuries were too gruesome for other customers to see, appears to have been made up.

The Laurel Leader-Call newspaper in Mississippi is calling the incident a “Kentucky Fried Hoax”.

The story recently went viral with many people siding with the girl’s family, who claimed that KFC asked Victoria Wilcher to leave. The family said Wilcher was injured when three of her grandfather’s Pit Bull dogs mauled her.

But now, the girl’s family is accused of “bilking the public and professionals for more than $135,000 in cash, as well as gifts and free surgeries," the Laural Leader-Call reported, citing anonymous sources.

The girl’s grandmother told KFC that the incident at their restaurant happened on May 15. However the newspaper’s sources say two KFC restaurants near the hospital where the girl was treated for her dog mauling injuries could not find evidence that the girl was in either restaurant.

The source also told the newspaper that no orders on May 15 included mashed potatoes and sweet tea on the same ticket or part of a larger order, which is what the girl’s grandmother Kelly Mullins told WAPT TV in Jackson.

The source also said that a hospital patient had never been asked to leave either one of the KFCs near the hospital.

“We have never ever ever run off anyone, and we have seen some really really sick people come to the restaurant from the hospital,” the source said. “We’ve had people come in who were shot in the face. We’ve had them with tubes and wire sticking out. We never have asked anyone to leave,” the source told the newspaper.

The family’s attorney, Bill Kellum, told the Laurel Leader-Call that the family did not go searching for national attention and they have not decided if they’ll accept the $30,000 that KFC said it would give them.

Kellum told the newspaper he was waiting to find out the results from an investigator hired by KFC to look into the allegations.
