Dad dances with disabled daughter in pageants

DALLAS, Ga. -

A father dancing with his disabled daughter is touching the hearts of many in the online video world.

Mike Carey is seen dancing with his 12-year-old daughter McKenzie, who suffers from mitochondrial disease, at a pageant in a video recently posted to YouTube.

According to TODAY.com, this isn’t the first time McKenzie and her dad have competed in a pageant. In fact, the duo has participated in more than 100 pageants, performing the two-step, hip hop, waltz and more.

“Pageants give her the same opportunity as other children and show people that she can accomplish anything with a little bit of help,” McKenzie’s mother Tammy told TODAY.com. “I just want the judges to look at her, not her wheelchair.”

According to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, mitochondrial diseases result from failures of the mitochondria, specialized compartments present in every cell of the body except red blood cells. Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90 percent of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less energy is generated within the cell.

According to TODAY.com, the Careys compete in pageants to raise money for the extensive treatments needed to help McKenzie with her disease.
