JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Ian McKinney of the Johnson City Cardinals was named the Appalachian League’s Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 16-22.
The Orlando native pitched seven shutout innings in his second start of the season at Bluefield on June 21. In his Johnson City debut, McKinney allowed only two hits while fanning five Blue Jay batters.
McKinney’s first start of 2014 actually came in Williamsport on June 15, for the State College Spikes (Class A Short Season). At Williamsport, the 2013 fifth-round pick pitched five innings while giving up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
In 2013, McKinney was a member of the Gulf Coast League Cardinals where he pitched 30.1 innings in ten appearances and managed a 0.89 ERA while limiting left-handed hitters to just one hit in 23 at bats. The left-hander also had a streak of 25 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. During the streak, he surrendered just 15 hits and four unearned runs.
McKinney is scheduled to make his next start for the Johnson City Cardinals on Friday, June 27 when the Cards make the short trip to Bristol for an Appalachian League West showdown at 7 p.m. The game can be heard for free on the TuneIn Radio app or at jccardinals.com.
