Cement-encased dismembered body identified as missing Jacksonville man

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT - A missing Jacksonville, North Carolina man, whose dismembered body was found partially encased in cement inside a garage behind a northwest Detroit home, has been identified.

WWJ, a CBS affiliate in Detroit, MI says the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body as 23-year-old Sheldon Prawl. Prawl was reported missing from Jacksonville in October, 2013.

“Law enforcement authorities in Michigan identified human remains found there as the body of Sheldon Prawl.” said Lieutenant Ronnie Dorn, Supervisor of JPD Investigative Services Division, on Wednesday morning.

Prawl’s cause of death hasn’t been disclosed.

WWJ reports that Beverley Daley, of New York, said her son was living in Jacksonville for about a year before his disappearance on October 30, 2013. Daley says Prawl wouldn’t have had any reason to go to Michigan.

The dismembered corpse was found May 30 in the garage of a home in Detroit by a person who noticed an overwhelming foul smell and called police.

Authorities were able to identify Prawl after police released an image of a distinctive tattoo on his forearm. Daley said her son got the tattoo in honor of her sister who died of a heart attack.

WWJ says investigators are still trying to find a suspect.

“We offer our condolences to the family of Mr. Prawl.  Our detectives are working closely with Detroit Police department on this active and open investigation.” said Deputy Chief Tim Malfitano.
