Cumberland Co. reports 8th case of rabies in 2014

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Cumberland County Animal Control reported its eighth case of rabies for the year Wednesday after a test came back with unsatisfactory results.

The Department of Public Health treats inconclusive or unsatisfactory rabies test results as positive, animal control said.

A man was bitten by a stray kitten on Highway 242 in Roseboro, authorities said. The man contacted animal control after he shot and buried the kitten.

“This is a good time to remind citizens that anytime you approach an injured animal whose rabies history is unknown, you are exposing yourself to possible rabies and to having to receive post-exposure prophylactic rabies treatment,” said Animal Control Director Dr. John Lauby.

The rabies test results were unsatisfactory because the cat was too badly decomposed, animal control said.

The man is receiving treatment for exposure to rabies, authorities said.
