Duke baseball team honored by ACC for sportsmanship

GREENSBORO, N.C. -

The Duke baseball team was one of three ACC Sportsmanship Award Winners for the 2013-14 academic year, the league announced Monday.

On April 18, 2014, the Blue Devil team traveled to Blacksburg, Virginia, for a series against Virginia Tech.

The date came two days after the seven-year anniversary of a shooting where 32 Virginia Tech students and faculty members were killed in 2007. The Duke players stopped by Burruss Hall, and the team lined up by the April 16 Memorial for a moment of silence in honor and remembrance.

Also honored by the ACC was the Notre Dame Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Florida State swimmer Hannah Wilson.

The Notre Dame committee provided a fruit/snack basket at each visiting ACC opponent’s hotel to welcome ACC teams to South Bend. The card attached the baskets read: “We look forward to facing great competition as a new member of the ACC and would like to welcome you to the Notre Dame campus for the first time as a fellow conference member.”

Florida State’s Wilson, a senior from Tupelo, Mississippi, traded her swim cap with Pitt’s Lauren Matevish following a meet involving the two schools. Wilson’s gesture was her way of welcoming the Panthers to the ACC in their first year as league members.
