COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Muscogee County School District has announced there is space available at several schools in the district for parents looking to transfer students from their otherwise assigned school.

Georgia House Bill 251 application requests are accepted June 30 until July 14th at 5:00 pm. Forms are available at all schools in the Muscogee County School District and at the central registration office.

House Bill 251 allows parents to choose a school for their child in the district other than the school of assignment from a list of schools where space is available. Transportation is not provided and appeals are not allowed, according to district spokesperson Valerie Fuller. Students are selected using a lottery system.

A list of the identified schools with space available is posted on the Muscogee County website can be found here (in pdf form) or on the district's Web site, www.muscogee.k12.ga.us.

The law does not apply to charter schools or newly opened schools for a period of four years from the date a school opens. Parents who are interested in applying must complete and submit a House Bill 251 Request Form and return it to the Muscogee County Public Education Center, located at 2960 Macon Road, in the Division of Student Services. The deadline to submit forms is 5p et on July 14, 2014. Parents may also determine the school of assignment by accessing the School Locator at https://locator.muscogee.k12.ga.us/Locator/. To access the information you can type your street address in the online link of the school locator to see the school of assignment. All assignments are determined by the parent/guardian's legal home address.
