CHOCOWINITY, N.C. -

Beaufort County Emergency Management officials say a house fire Thursday night was caused by lighting.

Emergency Management Director John Pack says the fire on Whichards Beach Road started around 8 or 8:30. He says it’s believed about 50 percent of that home was destroyed. The scene was cleared by 10.

We're told the Chocowinity Fire Department confirmed the fire was started by lighting.

Pack says there have also been some trees down in the county, but crews have been working quickly to clear them from roadways. There are still some isolated power outages in the county.
