Carden, Hardy named to "watch lists" for national awards

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina seniors Shane Carden (QB) and Justin Hardy (WR) have been named to the 2014 Maxwell Award Watch List according to a release by the Maxwell Football Club Monday. The award is given each year to America’s College-Player-of-the-Year.

Hardy also garnered inclusion on the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, which is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung, the Golden Boy.

Carden, a quarterback who was named Conference USA's Most Valuable Player in 2013, passed for an ECU single-season record 4,139 yards and completed an FBS second-best 70.5 percent (387-of-549) of his throws with 33 touchdowns. The Houston, Texas prep product also ran for 10 scores, and against Ohio in the Beef `O' Brady's Bowl, caught a 14-yard TD pass to help the Pirates to a 37-20 victory.

Hardy, a two-time First-Team All C-USA receiver, hauled down an ECU and league-best 114 passes for 1,284 yards to establish new single-season Pirate records to go along with his eight TDs. The Vanceboro, N.C. native also set school career marks for receiving yards (3,047) and TDs (25) last season, and will begin the '14 campaign just three receptions away from breaking Dwayne Harris' record of 268 catches.

In January of this year, both Carden and Hardy were two of 13 outstanding college football players named by the Touchdown Club of Columbus (Ohio) as Players To Watch for the 2014 season.

The senior duo joins junior Montese Overton as members of the 2014 Pirates to earn preseason award watch list honors. Last week Overton was named one of 40 players on the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Linebacker Trophy Watch List.

East Carolina, which will play its inaugural campaign in the AAC this fall under fifth-year head coach Ruffin McNeill, was 10-3 in 2013 and successfully completed the program's seventh postseason appearance in the last eight years with a 37-20 win over Ohio in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl.

The Pirates will open the 2014 season at home against North Carolina Central inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on August 30 with an 8 p.m. (ET) scheduled kickoff.
