CARY, N.C. -
A portion of Cary Parkway will be closed through mid-August while contractors make improvements to the road's intersection with Old Apex Road.
The town said the intersection will be closed for about 28 days beginning July 14 to install 1,500 square yards of new asphalt, 300 linear feet of new sidewalk, eight upgraded traffic signals, eight new pedestrian signals and marked crosswalks.
"Understanding the vital role these streets play for our business owners and residents, we're committed to working safely, efficiently and effectively as possible to complete the project on time and within budget," said Transportation Engineer Bob Shultes.
Detours will be in place throughout the closure to help motorists navigate around the intersection. Drivers should follow Old Apex Road to US-64 to Lake Pine Drive.
Shultes said the town had hoped to avoid closing both direction of Cary Parkway, but after consulting with both NCDOT Rail Division and CSX, the town decided "instituting a full closure was necessary in order to be time sensitive and cost effective."
About $490,000 in capital funding is allocated for the railroad crossing repairs.
