CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A Chesterfield father is accused of driving drunk with his one-year-old son in the car. He ended up needing medical attention after a confrontation with police.

Thomas Jennings, Jr. is facing child neglect, obstruction of justice, and a DWI charge.

"I'm very upset," said Deshonda Jennings. "I'm hurt. I'm confused. It's not making sense."

Deshonda is happy she can now hold her one-year-old son after her husband, Thomas Jennings, Jr. was accused of driving drunk with the child in the car.

"I'm just thanking God that nothing happened," said Mom.

Court documents show the suspect's license had been revoked because of three prior DUI convictions. That history drove Deshonda to text her teen son while she was working on June 27, 2014.

"I texted my 16-year-old to hide the key until I returned home," said Jennings.

Police stopped the suspect on the 6600 block of Hull Street Road. Officers reported a "very strong odor of alcohol." They say Jennings had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.

"Do you blame your husband?" we asked Jennings.

"I blame the 16-year-old who gave him the keys," said Jennings. "And then I blame the husband for not being responsible to say okay...I'm drinking. I don't want your mom's keys."

However, Jennings insists Thomas is a devoted father.

"He's an awesome father," said Jennings.

"Do you think this was a good decision?"

"That was a bad decision all the way around," said Jennings. "But as we both know...people under the influence of alcohol do not make wise choices."

Jennings is due in court in late September.
