1 shot in Fayetteville hours after anti-violence rally

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

A man was shot during an attempted robbery early Wednesday morning in Fayetteville.

Police were called to the area of Northumberland Street near the S. Reilly Road intersection to investigate a call of a reported shooting at approximately 2:52 a.m.

Police said Gregorio Atiles, 32, was walking home when he was approached by four males. One of the suspects was armed with a shotgun, police said.

The suspects tried to rob Atiles but he attempted to run from the suspects. A shotgun round was fired and hit Atiles as he ran away, police said.

Atiles was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment where he was later released, Fayetteville police said.

S. Reilly Road between Cliffdale Road and Northumberland Street has been temporarily closed while the investigation continues.

The shooting comes just hours after an anti-violence rally wrapped up outside the Cumberland County Courthouse in Fayetteville Tuesday night.
