4000 lb statue makes its way from Italy to Greenville

A 4,000 pound statue made its way from Italy for Greenville on Monday.

St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Greenville welcomed a hand carved statue of St. Francis of Assisi this week.

Father Michael Butler says a donor, who wanted to remain anonymous, approached the church about making a contribution. A year ago, a carver began working on the statue commissioned by that donor.

Father Butler says the marble statue began its journey to The United States of America by boat four months ago. On Monday, the church had to call in a crane company to move the statue to its final resting spot in front of the church.

Father Butler says this statue will be a daily reminder of St. Francis’ life of humility, generosity, and love for children and animals.

"We do have lots of kids here. My dogs come to work every day. He's just a beloved saint, a real example of poverty and humility and giving yourself to God totally," said Butler.

Father Butler says in the next couple weeks they plan to build benches around the statue so parishioners have a place where they can come and reflect with God.
