Hillsborough 8-year-old serves as an inspiration to others

Posted: Updated:
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

Many of us think about volunteering our time to help the less fortunate, however, unfortunately a lot of people don't act on that thought.

For one 8-year-old girl in Hillsborough, she does act on it. Genesis Crawford could teach us all a lesson about putting others before ourselves.

Like other third graders, Genesis loves the summer break from school. Genesis is unique, though.

"It's a lot of fun helping out," she said.

Genesis has a sign on a bin at the end of her driveway that simply says "Food Drive." She came up with the idea.

"I heard it on a commercial, it said some kids didn't have any food."That was all she needed to hear to decide to do something about it.

"I thought it'd be a great idea for the kids at the orphanage or somewhere to have some food," she said.

With the help of her parents, they sent out an e-mail to neighbors asking for food donations. This is her second time collecting food.

Genesis said she did it again this year because she wanted to get more food for people who still don't have any food.

Last year, neighbors and friends donated more than 500 pounds of food. Her parents helped her deliver it to local food banks like Urban Ministries of Durham.

Genesis said her goal this year is 900 pounds. She said it makes her feel happy."It feels like I did a good job."

She has served as an inspiration. Now people from her church are performing good deeds for people in the community.

Genesis will continue to spend her summer riding her scooter and checking her bin every day in hopes that it will be filled to the brim.

At this point of the summer, she has collected 347.2 pounds of food and plans to continue her food drive through the end of summer.

Genesis said she wants to continue her food drive next year and that she also wants to collect clothes in addition to the food.
