The attorney for Panthers' defensive end Greg Hardy wants a jury to hear the case. Tuesday, a judge convicted Hardy for communicating threats and assaulting a female. He will appeal the judge's ruling.
The District Attorney's office is prosecuting the case and won't comment on a pending case, but they did say there are 500 misdemeanor appeals pending. Scheduling could take some time because Superior Court appeal trials for domestic violence cases are heard once a week each month. A court spokesperson said Hardy will not receive any special treatment as far as scheduling.
Hardy's case has garnered more attention than most domestic violence cases. The domestic violence courtroom where Hardy testified about defending himself and where Nicole Holder described being almost killed has a full docket every day.
Mike Sexton who works with the Women's Commission in Mecklenburg County says it's good that we are talking about domestic violence but adds it's sad that it takes a celebrity for us to talk about a serious issue that's affecting thousands locally.
"This is a huge issue. This is a large rampant problem in Charlotte Mecklenburg because we're dealing with an average of 36,000 911 calls emergency calls, domestic violence related calls a year," said Sexton.
Sexton also says last year 9,200 criminal reports were filed for domestic violence last year. He says if you break that down it's about 25 a day. And he says that doesn't account for all the people who don't come forward because of fear or shame.
Sexton wants people to realize this is a life and death issue. And wants people to know there is a life line for victims. If you are afraid for your life, call 911. There are other numbers to call too.
Sexton also says all of us need to get involved. If you hear something that sounds like domestic violence, don't be a hero but call 911 to send police.
