SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) -

A high school senior from Raleigh is recovering after being bitten on the foot while on vacation at Sunset Beach in Brunswick County.

According to police, the incident happened on Sunday between 11th and 12th Streets in Sunset Beach.

According to WECT reporter on the scene, the student said he saw a shark in the water that was about two or three feet long. It swam between his legs and bit him on his foot.

Officials on scene said they were not sure if it was in fact a shark or some other animal responsible for the bite.

Family members of the teen said the 17-year-old received 17 stitches on his left foot where he was bitten by what the doctor said could have been a juvenile tiger shark.

Family members told our reporter on the scene that the wound was "sizeable" in the shape of a "V".

Emergency officials say the teen is expected to be okay.
