Nan Rich touts grassroots campaign for governor

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Campaign stops like the one in Pinellas County last week are how Democratic gubernatorial candidate Nan Rich is getting her message out.

She doesn't have the money her opponents do. So while the two men who have already been governor are showing up in TV commercials, Rich has a different approach.

"I will let the two of them go ahead and sling the mud at each other," Rich said. "I'm trying to stay above that."

Rich even lumps both men together.

"On vouchers, I put them in exactly the same category," Rich said of her Democratic opponent, Charlie Crist, and Republican Gov. Rick Scott. "They both supported vast expansion of vouchers that's using public dollars for private schools."

She has picked up supporters like University of Tampa student Tyler Barrett.

"We're knocking on doors. It's grass roots," Barrett said.

Barrett heard about Rich on Facebook. He calls her the only Democrat in the race.

"Charlie Crist had a chance to be governor, and when he was he took that chance to be a conservative, right wing governor," Barrett said.

While Crist recently named a running mate, Rich says she doesn't plan to do the same before the primary.

"We need to wait for the voters to choose first," Rich said.

Rich has asked her Democratic opponent to debate her. Crist has said he is focusing his attention on Gov. Scott.

But a News Channel 8 poll indicates an overwhelming majority of respondents - 68 percent - would like to see a debate between Crist and Rich. While 14 percent said no.

The primary is Aug. 26.
