(NBC News) - Finding inexpensive ways to purchase expensive college textbooks has led to a thriving industry online in used textbooks, but experts say that will soon change.

Whether you are looking to buy or even rent for a semester, publishers are behind a push to satisfy the used textbook demand with a newer technology in digital textbooks.

"Publishers are being flexible to make sure they can still get money from you whether it's a digital format rather than having you buy it from a student from last semester," said Bridget Carey, a senior editor for CNET.com.

It's taking a while for users to warm up to digital textbooks, however, as shown in a recent survey of more than 500 college students which found that nearly 60 percent still prefer the print version.
