HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The governor's new political commercial is rubbing some people the wrong way.

Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy's ad references the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

"Gov. Malloy has the courage and conviction to stand up and do the right thing," Nicole Hockley says in the ad.

Hockley lost her son Dylan in the shooting.

State Republican Chairman Jerry Labriola said the governor is exploiting the massacre for political gain.

However, the Malloy campaign said Hockley reached out to it. She said she wanted to help Malloy get re-elected.

Twenty-six students and educators were gunned down at the school in December of 2012.
