LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

A 14-year-old was shot and killed Wednesday night after an altercation with a 43-year-old man in Lakeland.

Police say the teen, Davion Smith, was a documented gang member in Lakeland.

According to the Lakeland Police Department, Smith had been named as the suspect in a July 28 home invasion at 516 Oregon Ave., the residence of Virgil Canteen.

Around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night, police said Smith went to Canteen's home with a gun and confronted Canteen.

An argument followed and both were shot multiple times. The gunfire occurred in the courtyard in between the duplex apartments.

Smith is also connected to the shooting of a 79-year-old grandfather at a farmer's market in Lakeland in 2012.

At last report, Canteen remained at Lakeland Regional Hospital. His condition is unknown.

No charges have been filed in the case pending further investigation.

News Channel 8 is on the scene and will have a full report at 5:00 p.m.
