McCrory names Collier as acting SBI director

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Pat McCrory has appointed Bernard Collier II as acting director of the State Bureau of Investigation as part of a legislative reorganization of North Carolina's law enforcement.

The SBI had been part of the state Attorney General's office, but it's now within a Cabinet-level agency of the governor and the director will be a McCrory appointee.

McCrory said Thursday in Charlotte they'll begin looking soon for a permanent SBI director. McCrory previously appointed Collier as director of Alcohol Law Enforcement in 2013.

The Republican governor says moving the SBI to the Department of Public Safety as an independent agency will free the position from political influence.

But the move also cuts into the budget of Attorney General Roy Cooper, a Democrat looking ahead to challenge McCrory in two years.
