CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora said he is concerned with the sudden lack of depth along the Tar Heels' defensive line.

The Heels recently lost senior Shaun Underwood to academics. Fedora is now at risk of losing senior Ethan Farmer to academic issues.

“Especially when it's a senior and you only have six scholarship seniors,” Fedora said. “Yeah, that's a concern."

In the meantime, Farmer works and waits to learn his status for the season.

He is just one of two senior defensive lineman for the Tar Heels. The Tarboro native is the most experienced defensive lineman for the Heels after starting all 13 games last season.

UNC defensive line coach Keith Gilmore said Farmer is a leader for the team.

“He's been great. He knows he's a leader and at least he hasn't shown that it's affecting him any. I'm sure he's a little worried underneath it all but he hasn't let it show," Gilmore said.

Experience may be thin for the defensive line but the young talent in the trenches is confident.

“Those guys are motivated and they're motivated to show you guys that they're out here to take care of business," said senior linebacker Travis Hughes.

Carolina opens the season against Liberty Aug. 30 in Chapel Hill at 6 p.m.
