Restored Roanoke River Lighthouse opens to public

Posted: Updated:

EDENTON, N.C. (AP) - Work to restore the Roanoke River Lighthouse is almost done, and the public is getting a chance to see what it looks like.

The lighthouse, which dates back to 1886, formally opens to the public on Friday. A sneak peek was held one week ago.

Historic Edenton staff and curators with the Division of State Historic Sites will present the completed project beginning with a 10 a.m. grand opening ceremony. Visitors can tour the lighthouse for free until 5 p.m.

Community advocates began working toward restoration in the 1990s, and the state of North Carolina became involved in 2005. Work focused on setting up the lighthouse with furnishings that represent the life and work of a late 19th century lighthouse keeper.
