CARY, N.C. -

The Publix Super Market that will open this year in Cary is hiring.

The new store will begin accepting applications in person on Monday at 10 a.m., store officials said Friday.

People interested in working at Publix must apply in person through Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Homewood Suites in Cary at 100 Macalyson Court.

The opening day of the store has not been announced but Publix expects it to open by the end of this year. The store will be approximately 49,000 square feet and will employ a total of 125 people, according to Publix spokeswoman Kimberly Reynolds.

This is the first Publix to open in the Triangle as Publix looks to expand in North Carolina. The store will be at 1020 Bradford Plaza Way.

Publix began in 1930 in Winter Haven, Florida, and had retail sales of $28.9 billion in 2013. Publix has 1,077 stores, with 752 in Florida, 181 in Georgia, 56 in Alabama, 49 in South Carolina and 37 in Tennessee.

Also, a new shopping area in North Raleigh that could include a 50,000-foot Publix has brought vociferous opposition from neighbors concerned about traffic.

Publix currently has two stores in North Carolina – one in Charlotte and one in Matthews.

Publix plans to expand in Charlotte and also has announced sites for Asheville and Winston-Salem.

Just a few weeks ago a Catholic-born, American man –- a former military school student, special forces aspirant, law enforcement officer and bodybuilder -- set off on a path far from any he'd envisioned for himself as a kid in North Carolina: on the other side of the world, in Lebanon, he was trying to figure out how to get into Syria and join ISIS, the most radical, bloodthirsty terrorist group of our times.
