Godwin speaks at Greater Greenville Sports Club

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

New East Carolina baseball coach Cliff Godwin was the guest speaker at the Greater Greenville Sports Club on Wednesday.

The former Pirate standout told stories of his days as a player under the late Keith LeClair, who died from complications of ALS.

Godwin had the crowd's attention with stories about the former coach.

"The way things transpired, it was not meant to be for us to win that," said Godwin, talking about the Pirate's loss in the NCAA Super Regionals in Kinston. "It was meant to be for me to come back here and I think Coach LeClair had his hand in it. It was a great experience."

Godwin continued. "The life lessons that I learned under Coach Leclair, you can't put a price tag on it. I hope I affect at least half of the people that Coach LeClair did in his coaching career and even after he got sick. If Coach LeClair hadn't gotten sick then I wouldn't be standing here, we wouldn't be talking about East Carolina going to Omaha for the first time because he would have taken the program there. I truly believe that in my heart. I'm very honored to stand here as the head baseball coach but I know Coach LeClair would have taken East Carolina to Omaha."
