Seahawk statue back at UNC-Wilmington

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - The Seahawk statue stolen last month has been returned to the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

Area media outlets report the 3-foot, 75-pound bronze statue was stolen July 5 and that earlier this month police released video footage showing three men of college age forcibly remove the statue. The local Crime Stoppers received a tip the next day that resulted in the recovery.

The investigation into the theft is ongoing and campus police say they will release details of the recovery later.

The university hired sculptor Joe Orlando to create the statue sixteen years ago and it cost the university $37,000 at the time.

It's not the first time the bronze has been stolen. It was taken in 2003 and then recovered a few days later at a local apartment complex.
